Shades of Happiness

I recently moved from Maryland to California and I spent a lot of time looking for dense forests or parks to go hiking in. Quickly realized they are a little harder to find, than back home. So I wanted to explore data and highlight certain trends found within LA County and their tree canopy coverage.

The exploratory data phase was done in Tableau to help explore trends. The bubble chart was used to create the proportions of each leaf on the final leaf visualization.

The elements for the strong start index design were chosen to represent Southern California. The Jacaranda trees are common and create a magical backdrop in Southern California. I used a yellow to display the data to help the visibility and bounce off the page.

The leaf visualization contains two bar charts at the top of the design. I wanted to further explore some data and compare neighborhoods who had the most and least tree canopy coverage percentages. Texture was added to the bars in the bar chart to visually create a leaf, bark, nature type surface.

The legend details every decision made in putting together the leaf design. Each position, angle, and color was chosen with a specific meaning. There are examples found on the top and bottom of the legend to help the viewer read the visualization.

Environmental inequalities

As a major city, Los Angeles County struggles to create green spaces within it's neighborhoods. There are major inequalities where trees are located and lower income neighborhoods receive less benefits that are attributed with having shaded homes.

Explored Data

When looking through data, I compared the percentage of tree canopy coverage with parameters like mental health, population, and individual  neighborhoods.

Strong Start Index

A measurement calculated for each baby born in California to determine the number of assets baby is born with. This calculation allocates resources to neighborhoods and communities who are more in need than others.

There is a correlation between tree canopy coverage percentages and strong start indexes.
